SUMMARY: The Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED) holds an MMD with an appropriate QMED or Assistant Engineer’s rating. This position is full time and s/he will work directly with the Chief Engineer. When not sailing onboard as a QMED, the QMED will assist the engineering department in routine maintenance and repair of the northern California fleet. Travel between San Francisco, Berkeley and Sacramento is required.
Position specific responsibilities:
• Start, monitor and maintain all machinery • Assist Chief Engineer in all aspects • Handle mooring lines • Participate in safety and security drills as required on WQSB • Enforce crew and passenger safety • Stand engine watches as required • Gain and maintain expertise in use of fixed fire suppressing systems • Perform routine maintenance and repairs fleet wide • Troubleshoot and resolve vessel issues, including plumbing, electrical and mechanical • Fill and pump fluids as needed and perform oil changes • Switch from Shore Power to Generator and back • Plan for fueling and spill prevention

• Two years’ qualified engine room experience • High school diploma or equivalency • USCG MMD with QMED • USCG Assistant Engineer’s License with appropriate hp and route ratings • Lifeboat, Firefighting and STCW ratings • Ability to do basic mathematics • Ability to do light to moderate lifting and moving per USCG requirements (drag 50 pounds, open 56 pound water tight door, stpe over a 24” sill; ability to travel up and down stairs
