SCL is seeking a safety focused and environmentally concerned Senior Passenger & Tugboat Operator. The Senior Passenger & Tugboat Operator has the opportunity to work on a variety of challenging projects and participate in the operation and maintenance activities that strengthen and improve the reliable operation of hydroelectric plants. This position reports to the Manager of Skagit Maintenance. Operating out of Diablo Lake's boat landing, this position oversees vessel operations at SCL's Skagit Project located in Newhalem, Washington.
Newhalem, Washington is located 116 miles northeast of Seattle, in a very remote, rural area nestled in the northern Cascade mountain range at one of Washington State's most beautiful and scenic hydro generating facilities. Vessel operations include transporting equipment and personnel to Ross Dam, coordinating summer tours, overseeing the coordination of vessel maintenance and implementing safety policies, planning, training. During non-tour months, duties focus on supporting the hydroelectric project operations.
Other duties may include revision of policies and procedures, conducting and coordinating training, and pre-season tour and activity planning. Debris removal is also an important responsibility ensuring safe lake operations for vessel crew and recreational use. The waterways on Diablo Lake are narrow in places and during wind and inclement weather, necessitate a skilled vessel operator to perform duties safely. The Senior Passenger & Tugboat Operation oversees a crew of up to three personnel, adjusting for seasonal activities.
Vessel types used in lake operations include: two 26' tugboats, one 40' tug boat, one 42' tour boat, five fast crew boats, and many lengths of barges. Job Responsibilities: - Work as a tugboat captain operating Federally and State inspected passenger vessels assisting in the operations at the Skagit hydroelectric facility;
- Lead and participate in the work of personnel involved in boat operation and maintenance and direct the work of Utility Laborers serving as deckhands;
- Operates tugboats used to push or tow freight barges and floating structures through narrow channels, often in challenging weather conditions;
- Responsible for the planning and use of vessels and personnel involved in boat and maintenance operations;
- Performs routine boat maintenance and servicing duties;
- Maintains vessels and other equipment, including log floats, booms and lights;
- Ability to maintain safe vessel operations at all times;
- Ability to frequently lift objects weighing in excess of 55 pounds;
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather;
- Strong customer service skills working with internal customers, tourists, and other passengers;
- Ability to work as a team member in a diverse work force;
- Ability to prioritize work and revise work plans to meet project deadlines, and adapt to shifting priorities;
- Collects and assists in the disposal of lake debris; and
- Prepare and maintain records, timesheets, reports and related paperwork.
